Winter Travel Hacks: Save Money and Stay Comfortable

Hey travel enthusiasts!

It’s officially winter time and for some people this means lots of nights in front of the fire with a cup of hot cocoa. But for some of us (myself included!) winter is also the best time to travel. It is always very special to discover a new city during the holidays, or skiing in powder snow.

But winter travel is not easy as well. With the flight prices, the thick clothing, and the uncertain weather, it is not hard to spend lots of money and be unhappy.

Fear not, fellow adventurers! Here are a few tips I have managed to learn when it comes to the tricks of traveling in winter while on a very tight budget.

So, in this post, I’m going to give you my secrets, and hopefully, you’ll get to have your epic winter adventure for cheap. As you gear up for a budget-friendly winter escape, consider drawing inspiration from nature’s wonders—like the incredible wildlife sanctuaries we’ve covered before—to make your trip both memorable and cozy. One thing that I want to mention before starting is that I personally like to book cheap airport parking deals beforehand so that I can kick out any travel stress and save money for the trip.

Planning is Key: Snag Those Deals

First things first: while traveling during winter it is important to plan and plan well. Here are a few ways to be strategic and save some serious cash:

Be Flexible with Your Dates:

Hey, if you decide to travel during the Christmas and New Year season, be ready to dig deeper into your pocket. If you are flexible with your time, you can try to travel a few days before or after a major holiday. You will be amazed at the number of savings possible when it comes to the fares and available hotels.

Shoulder Seasons are Your Friend:

It is the shoulder seasons that are ideal for the traveler who wants to enjoy a destination but does not want to spend a lot of money. You will still be able to get the feeling of the winter holidays and save your money from being sucked by tourist companies.

Think Outside the Tourist Bubble:

World famous attractions remain famous for a reason but they are usually more pricey during the winter season.

Pro Tip:

Sometimes when I am travelling for a short time especially from UK, I always like to pre-book short stay parking Gatwick deals from Ezybook to save my time and money.

Embrace the Power of Package Deals:

The flights, the accommodation, and even more often the activities are bundled together by many travel agencies at a lower cost. This can be very useful if you are going skiing or if you have a weekend break to a Christmassy city.

Packing Like a Pro: Stay Warm and Save Space

Cold weather means that the clothes are thick and if you are traveling by air, this is the best time that the airlines will take their pound of flesh for extra baggage fees.

Here are some tips for packing light and staying warm on your winter travels:

  • Layers are Your BFF:

Signalling is the way to remain warm in variable conditions of winter weather. Pack a combination of thermal wear, base wear, woollens, and a warm top or jacket. This way, you can have your sweater on but if it gets hot you can just roll the sleeves up and it won’t be a problem.

  • The Magic of Merino Wool:

Merino wool is perfect for winter traveling as it will save your life. It is mild, let-through air and has no smell, so you can wear the same merino wool base layer for three or four days in a row.

  • Multifunctional is the Name of the Game:

As a rule, you should try to find clothes that will be versatile and serve more functions.  A travel scarf can be used as a blanket on the plane and a pair of hiking convertible pants can become shorts when visiting a warmer climate.

  • Don’t Forget the Small Stuff:

Take a hat, gloves and a warm scarf with you. Such little touches add a lot to the comfort you’ll experience whenever you’re outside the house.

Pro tip:

  • Hydration is Key

It might sound counterintuitive but cold weather can be quite dehydrating so be sure to take lots of water in the course of the day.  This will assist you to remain active and thus eliminate cases of developing headaches.
